Suspected credit card abuse drains local woman's account

Here is warning for all of you, the next time you fill up with gas, a midland woman paid a steep price at the pump and it wasn't because of the high cost of gas.

MIDLAND COUNTY, TX (KWES) - Bethany Plunkett, a native Houstonian has gotten used to life in the Tall City.

"Everybody tells me come home and I love it here," said Plunkett.

This past weekend she made a stop for gas. Plunkett says she was sure she ended the transaction, but charges began appearing on her account. Thanks to technology she knew something was wrong especially after she noticed a $200 gas bill.

"Honestly at first, I thought my mom had left and went and filled my car up because I was in the other room, I called her and asked if she went and got gas and she said no I'm in the living room. I said well someone is using my card at this location," said Plunkett.

Those charges showed up within minutes.

"The full amount of money that should have been in there wasn't in there because if it was, how much more could they have taken," said Plunkett.

Plunkett believes her information was compromised but one thing is for sure, texting alerts may have kept her from losing even more.

"Don't use your card at the pumps. Don't use your card at the ATM's, go to your bank. Get money out through your teller. Get out of your car and go inside," said Plunkett.

Plunkett tells us she has reported what happened to police and they are investigating. One of the businesses has been very helpful, they tell her they may have footage of the person who may have duplicated her card and have turned that information over to police.
