MISD program continues to help at risk youth

The MISD school board, passed the Optional Flexible School Day Program for the 11th year.

MIDLAND, TX (KWES)

The MISD school board passed the Optional Flexible School Day Program for the 11th year.  

The program that offers second chances to students that are at risk of not graduating.  

Currently, there are 129 students that are enrolled in OFSDP who have the option of flexibility 

"Flexible scheduling allows them to come after school. It allows them to come many a certain point throughout the school day. It also them to make up credits in the school year," said Monica Hernandez, Midland Independent School District.  

Some of the students have more responsibility than the average student.  

Primary breadwinners for their family and so for them. The only option if we did not have this program would be to drop out," said Mary Janousekcouncilor for OFSDP.  

Students go through a screening process so a schedule that works for them can be created.  

"To talk through what's life like for them, what's their work schedule? When can they come to school? When does it fit for them? How can we help fit some missing pieces? Are they caring for siblings? What does a day in their life look like," said Janousek. 

School officials say that the number of success rates has increased this year.
