ODESSA, TX (KWES) - Float therapy is becoming a trend around the country and it's picking up in Odessa.
Whether you have high blood pressure, back and neck pain, anxiety or depression, it's what many people are doing to ease tension and stress. A one hour session is said to equivalent to four hours of restorative sleep.
Joshua Reyes is a certified massage therapist who is opening up Revival Float Spa in Odessa, a spot where you can go for a massage, infrared sauna therapy or a new form of relaxation: float therapy.
"I was really trying to expand on the amount of people I can help in this area," said Reyes. "Whenever you're floating, your entire body decompresses so that quick alleviation on your joints is beneficial for pain and not to mention all the anti-inflammatory properties the salt has that you wouldn't normally get out of a massage."
A large tub is filled with skin-temperature water. It's 10 inches deep and holds close to 800 pounds of Epsom salt, which allows you to float on the water in pure darkness.
"The idea is you're minimizing as much sensory input as possible," said Reyes. "But when you're in there, it's completely different because your mind doesn't have to process anything. If I were just to offer advice, I'd say go in there with no expectations."
Everyone needs a little quiet time, and if you're ever down, float therapy could bring you back up to just float on.
There will be an open house where you can get a spa tour of the facility on July 10. The spa will be holding raffles and giving away a free float package.
The hours to stop by for the tour are 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., 2 p.m. - 4 p.m., and 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. The spa is located on 504 N. Sam Houston Ave. in Odessa.
The spa will have their grand opening on Thursday.
