1980 - While playing for the Houston Astros, Texas native Nolan Ryan picked up his 3,000th career strikeout. This made him the fourth man to reach 3,000 K's and he now holds the MLB record for 5,714 strikeouts.

1985 - This day in 1985, marked one of the longest games in the MLB lasting 19 innings. The New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves played a six hour game that started at 9 p.m. on July 4th and ended at 4 a.m. on July 5th. The teams used a combined 14 pitchers and had 46 hits. Although by the time the game ended it was the next morning, they still had fireworks.

1994 - The 1994 World Cup was held in U.S. on July 4th, U.S.A. took on Brazil in the round of 16 and came up just short losing 1 - 0. The game was played in front of a crowd of 84,147 fans.

2008 - Fast forward 14 years later to the summer Olympic trials. On July 4th, 2008, Michael Phelps set a world record in the 200-meter medley in the U.S. swimming trials in Omaha, Nebraska. This was Phelps second world record in one week.
