Midland Memorial asking for moms to donate milk

Midland Memorial Hospital, is asking for mothers with an oversupply of milk to donate the milk to be used for babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

MIDLAND, TX (KWES)

Midland Memorial Hospital is asking for mothers with an oversupply of milk to donate for babies in the neonatal intensive care unit

"A lot of them are not able to go to breasts right away because they are so small, or they are sick, or something is preventing that from happening," said Lori Prieto R.N, Midland Memorial Hospital.

Sometimes the mother could have trouble producing milk, so it’s a way for other moms to help out.

"You know giving moms a piece of mind, but a support system. They are supporting each other," said Prieto.

Before any donation is accepted the moms must go through a screening process before they can donate.

Who do apply to donate they have to go in and answer a questionnaire and they have to go have blood drawn before they do become a donor," said Prieto.

The milk donation can go a long way, for example, if a woman fills up 240 ML, and about 10 ML goes to each baby during a feeding, one donation could help about two to four patients.
