ODESSA, TX (KWES) - The Texas Department of Transportation will have a display of 929 pairs of "ghost shoes" at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa on May 15 at 11:00 a.m.

Each pair of shoes represents an unbuckled life lost in Texas during 2017.

The display is part of TxDOT's annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign to educate Texas citizens about the dangers of not using a seat belt belt while in a vehicle.

In the Odessa district alone there were 104 motor vehicle traffic crashes involving unrestrained occupants, resulting in a total of 77 serious injuries and 48 fatalities.

As part of the campaign, Texas law enforcement officers will be cracking down on and ticketing unbuckled occupants of vehicles from May 21 to June 3.

The use of a seat belt can reduce the risk of dying in a crash by 45% for those in a passenger vehicle, and increases to 60% when riding in a pickup truck.
