LAKE PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) -

Schools of dead fish floating for miles all across Lake Palestine; a smell that's almost indescribable.

"I smell this horrible odor, smell," lake resident Jim Walker says.

Jim Walker woke up to a disgusting smell, and when he looked out of his window, he saw what he described as "a fishy apocalypse."

"What
s wrong with the water, there were just so many dead fish," Walker says.

Greg Conley, with the kills and spills division of the Tyler branch of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, says these fish are white bass, and he
s calling the incident a single species kill.

Conley says he found the white bass population has contracted a disease specific to their species, also known as a post-spawn mortality event.

"We eat a lot of fish; that's my main food source is fish, I love fish, been eating it all my life," lake resident Don Whistler says.

Whistler is an avid fisherman who mostly lives on his catch; he's concerned the fish are unsafe to eat.

However, the Kills and Spills Department say
s as long as the captured fish are fighting back, it's likely to be healthy and safe to eat.
If the fish reacts slowly, it is unsafe to consume.

Conley says it's best for swimmers not to swim in areas where there are dead fish
