MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - The Midland Children's Rehabilitation Center hosted their annual BikeFest on the morning of May 12.

The event attracted dozens of families for a fun filled morning featuring a handful of activities for children.

The event started with a bike parade, where kids got the opportunity to safely ride down streets closed off by police.

One parent, Brigette Thoma, told us how much she appreciated the safety measures taken.

"Just because, a lot of places in Midland, you don't really feel safe driving around, we can't drive down our street on our bikes because people can come around the corner too fast," Thoma said. "So, this is just a really good opportunity for them to do it in a safe environment."

Several families dressed up their two wheeled rides with themed decorations. At the end of the ride, awards were handed out for some of the most creative bicycles.

The fun then moved into the facility's backyard, where games and a petting zoo were set up.

Organizers, like Executive Director Brooke Mueller, said this event was about providing kids with a place to have fun while also practicing life lessons.

"Opportunities for learning social skills, for developing communication skills, how you behave in certain situations, how do you share with someone, (those are) all skills that can come together at an event like this," said Mueller.

Mueller said this event was a true effort from the community since her non-profit receives no government funding and relies solely on volunteers and local sponsorships.
