BIG SPRING, TX (KWES) - Big Spring ISD will soon become a "campus carry" district.
According to Superintendent Jay McWilliams, the school board approved the Guardian Plan, which would arm some teachers.
The process will be voluntary for teachers, but there will be a list of qualifications that they have to meet.
Teachers must pass a psychological exam, as well as pass an initial drug test with regular follow-ups. They will also need a license to carry and must train monthly with the local police department.
The instructors who volunteer for the Guardian Plan will also be required to go through an alert training course that is designed to teach them how to react to an active shooter.
Big Spring ISD will start teacher-sign ups next week and hopes to have the program ready by fall.
