Andrews discus throwers to compete at state

ANDREWS, TX (KWES) - Two discus throwers from Andrews will be fighting for a State Title in Austin on Friday. Not everyone has the honor of calling one of their biggest competitors their teammates but for these Mustangs, that's exactly the case.

Jacob Mechler is seeded number two out of all the 4-A athletes and his teammate Paxton Hair sits right behind him as the third seed. An inch separates their best tosses. While the two seem to have a lot of fun, every practice gives them a sense of how they might place at state.

"We definitely kinda trade back and forth who's throwing further in practice," said Jacob Mechler.

"We're just making each other better some days he's better some days I'm better," said Paxton Hair.

Mechler, a junior, pushes his sophomore teammate, and Hair pushes right back, creating an environment that their Coach Mallory Hibbirt could only imagine.

"I have a set up here this year and the next year of a coach's dream," said Coach Mallory Hibbirt.

The discus is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, and both athletes are feeling ready.

"We're feeling good. We've been throwing some PRs in practice,"

As for the best case scenario for meet results?

"Someone from Andrews gets on the board," said Mechler.
