Multiple fires spread in Big Spring, 2 treated for heat exhaustion

BIG SPRING, TX (KWES) -

UPDATE: 5/7 6:33 p.m. 

The origin of the fire has been determined to be the south side of FM 700 near Mesa Street and and crossed to FM 700 just west of the Knollwood Heights Apartments on Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Several emergency crews responded to the situation, including the Texas A&M Forest Service and the Midland County Fire Department. With this help the Big Spring Fire and EMS personnel were able to contain the fire, preventing loss of structures.

Roads surrounding the fire have been opened back up as of 5:00 p.m.

UPDATE: 5/7 4:33 p.m. 

The Texas A&M Forest Forest Service is assisting with the fires. We're told an estimated 200 acres have burned and forward progress has stopped. 

Three large air tankers have been ordered. 

According to the Pepper Sullivan, two people are being treated for heat exhaustion. One of the people being treated is a firefighter, the other a civilian. 

At this time, about 1,368 people are without power.

UPDATE: 5/7 4:27 p.m.

F.M. 700 at MLK Blvd is shut down. 3rd and Old Highway 80 is also being shut down as firefighters work the fire.

The Big Spring Fire Department is working on a grass fire in the area of Ratliff Rd.
