Midland, Odessa officials to commemorate fallen officers during National Police Week

PERMIAN BASIN, TX (KWES) - The Odessa Police Department Honor Guard met the Midland Police Department Honor Guard on May 4 before they head to Washington D.C. for National Police Week.

National Police Week is scheduled from May 13 through May 19. It serves as a time to recognize the service and sacrifice of police officers who have died in the line of duty.

The OPD, Ector County Sheriff's Office, Midland County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Lubbock Police Department, and other agencies will hold a memorial service to honor these officers at 10 a.m. on May 18 at Sunset Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 6801 E. Hwy 80 in Odessa. There will be a brief memorial service for Texas officers who lost their lives in 2017.

Officers that will be honored from the Permian Basin include: Ector County Sheriff Deputy Thad West, Corporal Gordon "G.T." Toal, Officer Scott Stanton Smith, Lubbock Officer Rodney Kendricks, Corporal Arlie "Lee" Jones, Corporal John Scott Gardner, Corporal Abel Marquez, and Midland County Sheriff Deputy Mike Naylor.

Local officials are asking that the public replace their porch lights with blue bulbs to commemorate National Police Week.
