PERMIAN BASIN, TX (KWES) - Students across the Permian Basin were able to get out of the classroom on Friday to learn about Hispanic culture.
Both MISD and ECISD held events to teach students the history of Cinco de Mayo. The Odessa celebration was held at Buddy West Elementary School, while the Midland one took place at the Hispanic Cultural Center.
The students watched shows which included dancing and singing and got a lesson about why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated.
"Cinco de Mayo, back on May 5th of 1862 was the war Puebla, a battle in Puebla where the Mexican Army fought the French off, so it's just a commemoration of that event," said Luis Sanchez, President of the Hispanic Cultural Center.
The official holiday is May 5.
