WEST TEXAS (KWES) - Being in a car wreck could be anyone's worst nightmare, and driving distracted causes more crashes than you think.
In the Odessa district, Midland and Ector county make up about 76% of all the crashes.
The Odessa District is made up of 12 counties: Andrews, Crane, Ector, Loving, Martin, Midland, Pecos, Reeves, Terrell, Upton, Ward and Winkler.
"If you look at the last 3-years, 2015, 2016, 2017 in the Odessa District we average about 1,400 and some odd, nearly 1,500 distracted driving crashes each year," said James Beauchamp, President of the Midland Odessa Transportation Alliance.
However, Midland County makes up about 53% of those numbers, and averages around 780 crashes a year when it comes to distracted driving.
"Over half of all the distracted driving crashes that occur in this 12-county area occur in a single county, and in this particular case Midland County," said Beauchamp.
MOTRAN wants people to put their phones down while driving.
"They always need to remember that their number one goal at the beginning, middle and end of the day should be getting home safely back to their family and friends," said Beauchamp.
