MIDLAND COUNTY, TX (KWES) - The Midland County Jail is about 12 jailers short and part of the reason can stem from the oil boom.

A few jailers have had to leave because they say housing prices are so high and others have left because they were offered higher paying jobs in the oil field.

It's left many industries outside of oil companies seeking workers and it also leaves current employees forced to work overtime.

"Now, we are working overtime lot in the jail. Because, we have alot of vacant spaces in the jail we must by law have so many jailers per so many inmates. We have to have one jailer for every 48 inmates 24 hours 7 days a week," Sheriff Gary Painter said.

Jailers do not have to go through the law enforcement academy they just need to go through a background check, for more information click here.
