The Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry Contest awards four Midland College students with $1,300

Six Midland College students were honored, and $1,300 in prize money went to the top four winning poets at the annual Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry Contest on Thursday.

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - Six Midland College students were honored, and $1,300 in prize money went to the top four winning poets at the annual Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry Contest on Thursday.

"The contest inspires our students and encourages them to continue to write," said MC Department Chair of Technical Writing and Philosophy Brendan Egan who serves as contest coordinator.

Each year, Midland College English students submit poems for consideration to this contest. This year, Dulce Castaneda received $600 for her winning poems, "My Accent, "My God" and "White Canvas," Donijah McMaryion won $400 for her poem "Live Like Jazz," Meagan McQuien received $200 for "River Town,"  and Deverie Livsey won $100 cash prize for "Dear Borderline." Honorable Mention recognition went to Alayna Garcia and Kaitlyn Garland.

The winning poems will be published in the Midland College Tableau magazine.
