MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - Public and private schools in Midland are making their space a little greener and cleaner. It's part of the Cleanest Campus Competition that 19 schools are doing to see who can beautify and have the cleanest campus.

It's the first time Keep Midland Beautiful is holding this contest and judges rate a school campus to see which one is either the cleanest or the greenest, or both.

"We'd teach them cleaning up after yourself is really important, you're not always going to have someone else to pick up after you leave it there," said Midland Academy Sixth Grader Norma Ochoa.

The student-driven program aims to bring awareness to littering and recycling. Each campus had the entire month of April to work on those efforts. Whether that include recycling, cleaning, or creating art to their schools.

"It's been amazingly successful," said Midland City Councilwoman Sharla Hotchkiss. "We've had a lot of interest in it and a lot of schools that applied to be a part of it. I hope it'll expand to every school. because it helps the city but more importantly, it helps the individual children who are involved and they'll take that lesson with them for the rest of their lives."

Judging will continue for the rest of the week and a winner will be determined after. They'll win signage for their campus and a trophy.
