ODESSA, TX (KWES) - The Texas High School State Gymnastics Championships is this weekend and the Permian Basin will be represented by a few teams and individuals. For the third year in a row the Odessa High boys gymnastics team is headed to the state championships. Compared to last year's team, this year's squad is younger but their determination to keep Odessa High a top competitor in gymnastics made them successful throughout the season.
"We got a lot of freshman and I'm really proud of them because they've come a long way and they're all hitting their events and we're looking forward to doing our best," said Jared Villegas.
"To make state means you are one of the top 12 teams in the state. This year will be a big challenge for them because last year we ended in the top 6 and these guys want to continue that. They're building a legacy here at Odessa High School and it's beautiful to see. Everyone is buying into it and working hard to make it," said Coach Gonzalez.
Also representing Odessa and leaving her legacy is Lady Bronchos senior Brittney Paredes. Brittney individually qualified for state for the third time in her high school career.
"The first year was kind of a shock so now I know how it's going to all flow. I'll be able to go out there and do my best. I was blessed with one of the greatest teams I've had in all of my gymnastics career. That's something I'm definitely going to miss is all their support and love," said Paredes.
Odessa High plans to leave tomorrow morning at 5:30 am.
