Howard County fires leave one displaced, residents focus to protect property

HOWARD COUNTY, TX (KWES) - One man was displaced after his home burned down in Howard County yesterday.

His house off Craig road was right in the heart of the danger zone of the "Craig road" fire that scorched more than 460 acres east of Highway 87.

The man also had a barn suffer major burn damage on his property.

Officials say that resident is now staying with nearby family members as he works with emergency management and his insurance company to try and recuperate some of his losses.

Fortunately, the man was not injured.

We also spoke with his neighbors who did not want to be identified, but tell us they consider themselves lucky.

One man spent his afternoon trimming back the brush around his house in precaution.

Around town there were several other smaller structures destroyed by the fire including sheds and well houses.

Though the house off Craig road was the only structure destroyed with any residence inside.
