Keep Midland Beautiful Great American cleanup takes place this weekend

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - You can help make the Tall City a cleaner place. Keep Midland Beautiful is participating in one of the country's largest cleanups. The Great American Cleanup gets the entire community to clean up areas of the city from March 1 to May 31.

Every year, they take part in the non-profit's largest clean-ups, where they keep Midland's public spaces litter-free.

"We want to locate ourselves around Midland instead of just targeting one place so we can get everyone involved the best we can," said Keep Midland Beautiful's Education and Outreach Coordinator Audrey Sizemore.

This year, they're expanding their services to Washington Park, an area they found to have a lot of litter based on their litter index. But this is also the small community for the Company of Rockhouse. Which is why for 10 years, they make sure they do their part to pick up and clean up.

"We're cleaning up on that side of town because we adopted that spot as well," said Carletta Perro with Company of Rockhouse. "Since we are right around the corner from the park, we go once a week and do a 5K walk/run. We're trying to instill responsibilities in our clients and teaching them how to beautify the area. We love to keep Midland beautiful."

The three-month cleanup allows residents to focus on problem areas anywhere around town, even if it's not at a park, but in their neck of the woods.

"I live in Polo Park and we frequently see trash blow down our area so I try hard to keep that area clean," said first-time volunteer Aaron Bedell. "We have a lot of transient or people who come in for work in the oil field and many of them need to be aware that people live here and this is what we call home and we want them to call this home as well. So we hope everybody will pitch in even just a little bit. It's a great and wonderful opportunity to clean up our neighborhood."

Because a little bit goes a long way, this type of spring cleaning ensures trash is no longer a waste of this community's space.
