OPD: Man charged, arrested after officer assault, grabbing an officer's taser

ODESSA, TX (KWES) - Odessa police have charged and arrested a suspect for multiple accounts.

According to investigation, officers arrived at the Deluxe Inn Motel located at 1518 South Grant Avenue in reference to a disturbance early Monday morning.

At the scene, officers said they made contact with a male suspect, Omar Orlando Gonzalez,37, who was intoxicated on a substance other than alcohol.

Police said they tried to handcuff Gonzalez, but the suspect resisted and pulled his hands away and pushed officers.

Officers said the suspect fled and they tried to handcuff the suspect a second time, but the suspect continued to fight and resist officers.

According to authorities, Gonzalez grabbed an OPD officer's taser and took control of it as the officer tried to tase him.

While fighting, we're told Gonzalez kicked one OPD officer several times and kicked a second officer in the groin, before the suspect was placed in custody.

Further investigation revealed that one officer sustained bodily injury and the other officer sustained serious bodily injury on his right hand.

Authorities charged and arrested Gonzalez for: two accounts of assault on public servant with bodily injury, taking a weapon from peace officer, evading arrest with prior convictions, resisting arrest and for public intoxication.
