Event allows students to write letters, have multi-opinionated discussion about gun violence and school safety

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - Dozens of students looked to get the conversation started locally about gun violence and school safety at Odessa High School.

Tuesday night was the Together We Stand event.

The idea was sparked by two OHS juniors.

Those who came out got to write letters of support to the victims of the school shooting in Florida, along with writing letters to Representative Mike Conaway.

The students behind the event tell us they wanted to write letters and get fair opinions on the issue.

"We're so glad there is people who also want to see change in our school and our society. We have our principals here. We're happy everyone is here to support," said Destiny Vargas, event organizer, OHS Junior.

Vargas and her friend Alyssa Flores-Lopez said they hope to have more events and more opinions from the community, talking about solutions to gun violence and school safety in the future.
