MONAHANS, TX (KWES) - The Texas Department of Public Safety held a dedication memorial ceremony for Trooper Billy Jack Zachary Tuesday, March 27, 2018 in Monahans.
Zachary was killed when he was hit by a pickup truck while conducting a stop on I-20 near Monahans back in January of 2006.
The dedicated stretch of interstate is from mile marker 80 to mile marker 83, during the ceremony Texas DPS unveiled two signs that now signify the dedication.
The emotional ceremony was held at Jerry Larned Sports Complex at Monahans High school at 3:00 p.m.
Dozens of DPS officers, Monahan volunteer firefighters, police officers, as well as friends and family were in attendance to rememeber the fallen officer.
Trooper Zachary's wife Tara Pack, also gave an emotional speech, about the kind and caring person Zachary was.
"He was a man of many talents and many hats, he just loved the outdoors, loved golfing, baseball, softball and I think that's what drew him to law enforcement, just being outside and helping people," says Pack.
The highway dedication was made official by a bill that was founded by State Representative Brooks Langraf from district 81.
""It wasn't a tough sell to get this bill passed in the legislature, once I was able to tell story about the sacrifice that Trooper Zachary made there wasn't any opposition to this," says Langraf.
