ECISD students compete against each other in a trash pick-up contest

ODESSA, TX (KWES) - ECISD students are kicking off trash pick-up contest with Keep Odessa Beautiful. Permian High School and Odessa High School are picking up trash around their campuses to see who can gather the most trash.

"It's so exciting to see so many young people engaged in what we're trying to do in the city of Odessa and KOB and that keeps our environment clean," said Interim City Manager Michael Marrero.

This is the third year Keep Odessa Beautiful is hosting this program. Permian won the first year and OHS won the second year. The students said this is a way to keep their campus clean while showing other students how to make a positive impact in their communities.

"If it's clean, it's beautiful," said Permian Class President Adam Sotelo. "Even though we're schools going against each other, we're still in the same city. Our goal is to keep Odessa beautiful."

Trash bags will be documented by photos and a winner will be determined on April 22, Earth Day.

"At the end of the day, it shows their character," said Odessa City Councilman District 5 Filiberto Gonzales. "They're going to be able to influence other kids here at their school and be able to talk about their program that they're starting today. These are our future leaders and I want them to succeed."
