MHS soccer captain Donte Ferguson looks to finish season strong

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - The Midland High boys' soccer team is looking to finish strong in the last few matches of the regular season district games. Among the Bulldogs, roster is last year's district MVP and this year is a Bulldog captain. Senior Donte Ferguson is a standout central defender, but when he first started playing at the Midland Soccer Association, he had a different spot on the field.

"I started 13 years ago when I played for MSA. It was little me. I started off as a forward, but then I was crying to my coach that I don't want to play forward. So, he put me at defender and I've been playing ever since. I stuck with it. I like playing at a high level so I think it's pretty challenging," said Donte Ferguson.

Ferguson was handed one of the captain badges in the beginning of the season and being a two year varsity veteran, Donte knows the importance of being a leader especially with the younger guys.

"It means more than just leading on the field. It means off the field as far as how you present yourself and your team because everybody looks at you off that too. You got to set an example and always be there for your teammates. Be an all-around good player not just physically or athletically but mentally too," said Ferguson.

As the end of the regular season is getting closer, stakes in district play are getting higher and Ferguson hopes to finish his bulldog career strong.

"A goal for me is to reclaim district MVP for my second year and as a team win district and make it far in playoffs," said Ferguson.

After a tough loss on Tuesday against Frenship, the Bulldogs sit in third place behind Lee and Frenship who are tied for first. MHS looks to bounce back tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Amarillo Tascosa.
