MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis Police Department is investigating after a man attacked two women with a screwdriver at an elementary school.

The incident happened at about 9 a.m. Wednesday at Alcy Elementary School.

The victim Takherehara Smith, who works in the school’s cafeteria, told police that her estranged husband Bryant Smith called her several times Wednesday morning.

She told him she couldn’t talk because she was at work.

She said Bryant then walked into the cafeteria through a side door yelling and stabbed her with a screwdriver.

A second woman saw the attack and attempted to intervene, but he attacked her with the screwdriver too.

Both women were treated at the school for their injuries. They did not need to go to the hospital.

No arrests have been made, and police said this is an ongoing investigation.

Thursday, Shelby County Schools released the following statement on the incident:

An employee of Alcy Elementary was involved in an altercation with their spouse in the school’s kitchen Wednesday. As soon as staff members were alerted to the incident, the school was immediately placed on lockdown as a precaution, and police and District Security were informed. The area where the incident occurred is isolated from students and accessible for staff only. Security protocols have been reemphasized to employees at the school, which includes locking all employee and public entrances and making sure all visitors always report to the main office.

But now the incident is raising questions about security on the campus and how he was able to get into the cafeteria in the first place.

Parents picking up their children from Alcy Elementary said they are frightened and disturbed.

"That's very scary due to the babies at school and the bigger kids at school,” parent Evita Howard said. “It’s got to get better than this."

Takerehara said she is in pain, afraid, even embarrassed, and wants him caught.

She recalled what he said to her during the attack.

"’You think I'm playing with you. I told you I was going to get you. I'm fixing to kill your a**’ and he just went to stabbing, stabbing, stabbing," Takerhara said.

Takerehara has puncture wounds on her arm and her neck. She said Smith also stabbed a co-worker trying to pull him off of her and broke another co-worker's finger.

SCS said the attack happened in an area that's isolated from students. The district is also reminding employees to keep doors locked and make sure visitors report to the office.

Takerehara's mother said a week ago, Smith went after her only child at her apartment where she is staying with her five children. Bryant is the father of four of them.

"He came through the window on my daughter and my grandchildren and he attacked her then, he took a vacuum and started beating her," Takerehara’s mother Pam Green said.

Takerehara said she left Smith last month after five years of marriage and 15 years of dating.

Her mother has a message for Smith, who has a warrant out for his arrest.

"Bryant if you are watching this, I pray that you do the right thing and turn yourself in,” Green said.

The warrant out for Bryant accused him of aggravated assault and aggravated burglary.

If you know where he is, call police.

Shelby County Schools said there will also be extra security at Alcy Elementary.
