MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Mobile Police found a 1-year-old boy who was in a car that was stolen Thursday night in West Mobile.

Investigators said the child was in a black 2012 Toyota Camry that was stolen from the Energize gas station on Schillinger Road at Tanner Williams Road around 8:30 p.m. Half an hour later, a Mobile Police officer found the car abandoned at the Raceway gas station on Schillinger Road at Zeigler Boulevard.

The child was in the car. He is safe and has been reunited with his parents.

Gas station owner Pratik Acharekar recalls what happened.

"She got her stuff... She walked out of this door, she didn't see her car over here, so she went around the gas station to see if she parked it over there, the she came in running from the other door... Saying that someone had stolen her car... And the baby was inside -- 14 months old, 1 year old baby. That's when I called 911... That's when I realized something bad had happened," said Acharekar.

Acharekar says minutes later the suspect drove back by them.

"Maybe he didn't know there was a baby in the back... He realized it and came back, he kind of slowed down at this intersection... Maybe he wanted to drop the car off here... He saw us over here... Waving at him and he took off," said Acharekar. "She was terrified. She was crying. She didn't know what to do. She couldn't hold herself up. She was in a real bad state."

Surveillance video led police to the Exxon gas station across the street, where the child was found.

Jonathan David Spitzer, 28, of Semmes was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and first-degree theft of property, police said. He remains locked up in Mobile County Metro Jail, according to jail records.

The Mobile Fire-Rescue and Police Department could soon be operating out of the same facility. Public Safety Director James Barber proposed the idea of a new public safety building to the council. It was just the beginning of phase one. There's not even a picture of what it could look like yet, but it will be beside the current MPD headquarters on Government St and it will house MPD headquarters, Mobile-Fire Rescue, plus an actual fire station.  It's something Mobile Police Chie...
