ODESSA, TX (KWES) - Thursday marked the second day of the early signing period for high school athletes and 2 Permian football players signed to Division 1 programs.
Panthers quarterback Steve Steen signed his letter of intent to play at the United States Naval Academy and linebacker Preston Ellison has decided to continue playing at Southern Methodist University. Both Panthers reflected on their decisions and moving on to play in the same conference.
"Going into a Military Academy obviously makes both my parents extremely nervous knowing that after football I'm going to have to go into the military and do my 5 years of service. With that, they've been nothing but supportive and completely behind me and my decision to go and pursue that. I can't thank them enough," said Steen.
"It's something I've dreamed about ever since I was a kid. Of course, every kid wants to go and play D-I football and sadly a lot of those kids don't get to fulfill their dream. To know that I made it with my family by my side and what all these coaches have taught me and thinking about my football journey throughout my life just amazes me. It really humbles me. I can't express how excited I am," said Ellison.
"Obviously I'm going to have to put the stiff arm on Preston a couple of times, shake him a couple times. It's exciting. I'm excited to get to play with him on the next level. Y'all will get to see us on TV and I'll be talking a lot of trash to Preston. I'll be talking a lot of noise and I'm excited," said Steen.
"All jokes aside, I'm really excited for it. I think the last time I played against Steve was in 6th grade when he was at Reagan and I was at Barbara Jordan. It's been awhile but getting to play a friend in D-1 football, that's pretty big so I'm excited," said Ellison.
College football's early signing period ends Friday and the players who don't decide to sign now will wait until the signing period that starts on February 7 and lasts until April 1.
