ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

The Odessa Police Department spent their morning teaching recruits how to stay on their toes.

On Friday morning, a handful of recruits learned the proper way to subdue and arrest a suspect.

The training is one of the many recruits have to do.

One tip they learned is to take their time, especially in the heat of the moment.

"if you're trying to rush it, you're going to mess up. The slower you do it, the faster you get a better grasp of it," said Luis Villalpando, Recruit with the Odessa Police Department.

the recruits will go through driving and shooting courses next in their training to become officers.
