MIDLAND, TX (KWES) -

Since we're in flu season, pharmacists say the main way you can protect yourself is getting a flu shot.

Experts say it takes weeks for the flu shot to leave your immune system strong enough to fight against the flu virus.

So, the earlier in the season you get the shot, the sooner you're protected.

"It does take about two weeks to gain immunity from the flu shot, so if you do get sick within the first two weeks it's because you were already exposed, there's actually no way possible for you to get the flu from the flu shot. It really doesn't hurt that bad, the needle is very, very small. It's a quick little shot. Doesn't hurt at all," said Heather Williams, PHARMD with Market Street.

Williams said the best way to make sure you don't get the flu this season is to get the shot and keep your hands washed.
