Odessa residents starting efforts to "drain swamp" of city council members

Some residents in Odessa are fed up with city council. So much so, they want a few of them out but it's not an easy task.

ODESSA, TX (KWES) - Some residents in Odessa are fed up with city council. So much so, they want a few of them out but it's not an easy task.

"It just seems like there's one thing after another," said Chris Wray.

Thursday, residents put the plan in motion to "Drain the Swamp."

"Things don't seem right. They're not doing things right. They're not representing Odessa as a whole," said Wray.

The "they" Wray is talking about Odessa City Council members: Filiberto Gonzales, Barbra Graff and Malcolm Hamilton.

"We need to put a stop to that threesome. We need to break that up somehow. We can recall city counselors. That's what we're here tonight meeting about," said Wray.

The community believes the petition is a way to have their voices heard. Wray added the structure of city council needs changing.

"That's awfully a lot of weight to put on 5 people. I think there needs to be two at large districts, like they do in larger cities," said Wray.

2000 signatures from registered voters in the council members districts, that's how much they need for the petition. Wray said the plan to make this all happen isn't personal.

"It shouldn't have gotten to this. After one bad decision, they should've kind of squelched things," said Wray.

There is another meeting on the issue with Wray and others Saturday at 8:30 a.m. located at 6012 Eastridge Road in Odessa.

We tried reaching out to city council members and haven't heard back.
