ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

Odessa students got the chance to see what it takes to get a job in some of the state's most in-demand careers.

They talked to companies at the careers in Texas Industries Exploration Fair.

It's a statewide initiative to encourage young people on career choices.

Students got the chance to go out and talk to workers to find out what it takes to do their job.

They have some advice for the students.

"I would encourage them to remember that it is a very competitive workforce out there. You know kids have options out there. Whether it's education, oil & gas, construction, transportation, criminal justice. Kids have options. So you know we have to continue to do our outreach out there and encourage kids to think about careers and really think hard about those," said Willie Taylor, CEO of Permian Basin Office Workforce Board.

Students were encouraged to network with employers and learn how to pursue internships and apprenticeships.
