LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

By day, Greg Sanches is the Angelina county sheriff. Sometimes, by night, the former Golden Glove boxer dusts off the old boxing gloves and hits the speed bag.

Soon Sanches will be hitting the ring for an exhibition fight against boxing coach Alberto Rodriguez.

"I was asked to come do this exhibition fight at Six Guns Martial Arts," Sanches said. "They wanted me to reach out to the community and talk to kids about working hard and never giving up."

Sanches describes himself as a mover in the ring and not a brawler. He has plenty of experience. Growing up in Lufkin, he was on the city's team that participated in the Golden Gloves competition. He then fought other law enforcement officers when he found his career.

"I started in 1976 here in Lufkin," Sanches said. "I boxed in the Golden Gloves three times. I won it twice. Later I went to the first World Games for Police and Fire and won the silver. A year before that, I won the silver in the Police Olympics. Boxing has always been good to me. I hope it is good to me next week. I have been working out and trying to get ready for the match. The guy I am boxing is a lot younger than me. It is interesting. I think it will be an interesting fight."

Rodriguez is just hoping to have a good crowd come out and enjoy a show.

"We want this to be entertainment," Rodriguez said. "Boxing is a sport. This is not a fight. It is a sport, and I just want people to see what we can do. "

He is also not letting the age difference catch him by surprise.

"A bunch of my kids tell me, 'You better train for this fight and don't overlook,'" Rodriguez said. "I think he might show me somebody that I haven't met yet."

The fight will be Wednesday, Sept.20 at Six Gun Martial Arts, near the corner of Frank Ave. and Lufkin Ave. Bell time is 6:30 p.m.
