MIDLAND COUNTY, TX (KWES) - One man is recovering in a Lubbock hospital after he suffered significant burns to his body.

He has now been identified as 34-year-old Aaron Callaway.

University Medical Center tells us Callaway is currently in critical condition at this time.

Authorities said workers were digging a trench and they hit an Enlink Midstream Pipeline by accident. Dale Little with Midland County Emergency Management said 811 calls were made prior to digging.

Janna Gordon lives just down the street and was coming back from the grocery store when she saw the smoke.

"It almost looked like a rubber burning, you know how it's that thick and that black," said Gordon. "Growing up in West Texas that's what happens. It's just a fact of life."

We're told it's unclear at this point why the pipe was hit. Enlink Midstream said the pipeline is fully out of service. A full crew was present at the time of the accident and smoke wasn't a concern as the fire burned.
