(RNN) - Smirnoff Vodka launched its latest ad campaign over the weekend and left a social media frenzy in its wake.

The ad reads, "Made in America. But we'd be happy to talk about our ties to Russia under oath."

The snarky remark takes a swipe at the ongoing Russian scandals in the Trump administration while harking back to the brand's origins. The Smirnoff family, which founded the brand in 1864 in Moscow, fled Russia in 1917.

Though a lot of tweets say the ad is "trolling Trump," the company said it's just a lighthearted take on a timely topic.

"Smirnoff has been made in America for more than eight decades," a spokesperson for the vodka's current owner, Diageo, said in a statement. "The recent interest in American-made products created the perfect opportunity to reinforce that fact and the brand's roots in Russia -- with a wink and nod to current affairs."
