ODESSA, TX (KWES) - The Odessa Fire Department is gearing up for their "Fill The Boot" campaign to help fight Muscular Dystrophy.

On Thursday, Mayor David Turner proclaimed May 3 through May 5 as Fill The Boot Day in Odessa.

Firefighters across the country raise the most money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association every year.

This year, Odessa Fire and Rescue hopes to raise more than $90,000 to help local families in need.

"It's very important for us to collect but our city's been great to us. The citizens of Odessa have always been great. They have always donated a lot. They've always supported our efforts so we know we will have another good campaign this year," said Saul Ortega, Training Chief with Odessa Fire & Rescue.

Fire crews will be collecting from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the corner of 42nd St. and Andrews Hwy., 42nd St. and Tanglewood Ln. and 8th St. and Dixie Blvd.

Funds raised will go to fund groundbreaking research and will also send 35 local kids to an MDA summer camp.
