ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

A possible case of mumps at Wilson and Young Middle School turned out to be negative.

Ector County I.S.D. and the Ector County Health Department confirmed the results on Tuesday.

That confirmation is a welcome relief to the district as the initial report came out last week that a student tested positive for mumps on the first of the two tests at his family doctor.

However, a second test administered showed it was not the mumps.

Despite the confirmed negative case for E.C.I.S.D., health officials across the state are advising parents to make sure their children are up on their vaccinations.

In the meantime, here are some symptoms to look out for.

Mumps usually presents like the flu, with fever, achiness and then swelling of the parotid glands in the cheek.

The best way to make sure you and your children do not come down with the mumps is to keep your hands washed and do not share food or drinks.
