ODESSA, TX (KWES) - The Ector County Independent School District has released preliminary 2017 STAAR test scores.
The report showed some growth in 5th grade math and 8th grade math.
In 5th grade math, there was a 17% passing improvement from 54% in 2016 to 71% in 2017. For 8th grade math, there was a 9% passing improvement from 35% in 2016 to 44% in 2017.
Some other areas of improvement overall were in 5th grade reading Spanish and 8th grade reading.
In a release, Ector County I.S.D. said, "While we are pleased with some of the gains that we have made, we are not where we want to be or need to be. Our students are capable of so much more and our teachers have the ability to get them there. We are especially pleased with the gains we see in the cohort groups with 27 of the 28 elementary campuses showing gains and most showing double digit gains in math. If we stay with the system and trust the process, we will continue to move toward our goal of zero campuses in Improvement Required."
Some areas of overall improvement needed include 5th grade math Spanish and 5th grade reading.
The test will be given a second time. If more students pass on the second attempt, scores will likely increase.
