ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

The way your child's grade point average is measured in Odessa high schools is changing.

On Tuesday night, the school board voted to go with a new system for class ranking in high schools.

It's all to help students be more well-rounded.

Many times students skip classes like art or music because it doesn't help them get a higher GPA.

This new system changes that.

First off, it changes the weight given to advanced courses.

Only core courses, foreign languages, and international baccalaureate electives will be used to determine grade point averages for class rankings.

The end of the first semester is when senior class rankings will be finalized.

This policy change only impacts this year's 8th graders and younger students.

It does not affect students already in high school.
