(RNN) -  A man playing the part of Judas in a play accidentally hanged himself on Good Friday.

Reports say Jose Ignacio, 23, had a rope around his neck. The rope was connected to a tree.

The Easter play was taking place in Barranquillas, Mexico, and was meant to portray the final hours of Jesus’ life. The Bible says Judas, one of the 12 disciples, betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.

Judas led an arrest party to Gethsemane where Jesus was praying. Jesus was bound, put on trial and crucified. Judas later hanged himself in remorse.

The actor Ignacio apparently lost his balance while the rope was around his neck, fell and died from his injuries on the way to the hospital.

Officials have so far ruled the death an accident.

A similar fatal accident occurred in 2012 in Brazil when another man acting as Judas also hanged himself and died several days later.
