Mobile VA traveling around west Texas

(KWES) - The mobile VA is making its rounds to more rural cities in west Texas and New Mexico. It started in Stanton and Andrews on Thursday.
It's a 40-foot office on wheels, equipped with all kinds of tools to serve local veterans who can't make it out to the VA.

"We cover 28 counties with our rural veterans," said LeAnne Thornton, the outreach coordinator for the Midland Vet Center.

"We can have two counselors, one in this end, one in the other end [of the bus] doing counseling. They've been sent to fort bliss fort hood during the shootings,"

There's 200 mobile VA's across the country. This bus is from Abilene, but make no mistake, it travels just about everywhere here in west Texas.

"Most of the real rural that we see right now. That we see that aren't getting help They really haven't made a decision that they need the help. That's the hardest part," said Thornton.

The mobile VA will be making it's rounds through the weekend.

"We just make that outreach. It says, 'well they do care and I do need services,' and they just participate. It's just something about reaching out to somebody and saying we're here for you," George Robertson, the suicide prevention coordinator for the VA Medical Center in Big Spring.

The mobile VA has representatives for counseling, suicide prevention, as well as claims, but the first step is to show up and ask for help.

"When we look here, everyone here is a veteran. It's more than just a job for us. It is taking care of our brothers and sisters that were willing to lay their lives on the line for America," said Robertson.
