NEW YORK (RNN) - An EMT in New York died after being hit by a stolen ambulance in the Bronx Thursday.
Police said someone flagged the ambulance down while it was responding to a call and told the driver a man was riding on the back of the vehicle.
After the ambulance stopped, the man riding on the bumper went to the front of the vehicle and climbed into the driver’s seat.
Officials with the New York Fire Department said they tried to remove the man, but he put the ambulance in reverse, running over Yadira Arroyo.
Arroyo was a 44-year-old mother of five and a 14-year veteran of the New York Fire Department.
The suspect, who is now in custody, is identified as a 25-year-old man.
A second EMT sustained minor injuries struggling with the suspect, local media reported.
