MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - Xavier Curiel, 13, the Midland boy who was hit and killed by a car while walking to school was laid to rest Saturday.

His family held a ceremony open to the public.

Xavier was a student at San Jacinto Junior High. Dozens of his classmates were in attendance as they held a balloon release after the funeral at Dennis the Menace Park. The food and balloons were paid for by a student fundraiser.

The procession for the funeral was 30 cars long.

Xavier was running across the 2100 block of Texas Avenue when he was hit on February 24. He was transported to Midland Memorial, where he was pronounced dead.

After his death, a family member started a go-fund-me account to help pay for funeral expenses. The account nearly tripled it's goal of $7000.

His family says they are so thankful for the support they have gotten in the past week.
