Midlanders experience a little bit of the North Pole with Winter Wonderland

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - When you drive down Wall Street for the next three weeks you may mistake Downtown Midland for the North Pole, that's because the Downtown Midland Management District and others wanted to do something special for Christmas.

Natalie Shelton, Executive Director for the Downtown Midland Management District said, "We are constantly trying to brainstorm and figure out how to bring people downtown and things to do during the Christmas holiday."

The idea the Downtown Midland Management District came up with was the Winter Wonderland and Friday night they held a preview party for it. What organizers can't wait for the public to experience is the synthetic ice rink they set up.

Elizabeth McLellan, MODE Communications Coordinator said, "We're so excited."

The rink was put together by little synthetic sheets of ice and was lubricated so skaters can enjoy the same type of experience they would a regular rink.

"We we're like it doesn't really make sense to put an ice rink outside in downtown Midland so let's try something new. Let's try something that hockey players and figure skaters always practice on," said McLellan.

Whether it is the ice rink or the giant snow globe organizers say the Winter Wonderland is something even Santa Claus would be proud of.

"You start to see downtown transform what we always wanted it to be. We work so hard just to get the lights on the poles and just to make it feel more festive down here," said Shelton.

The winter wonderland is open to the public from December 3rd-23rd and event organizers said to expect the ice rink to be around every December for the next five years.
