(KWES) - A quest to find the recipient of a symbol of sacrifice courage and bravery that started right here has come full circle.
You might have seen the story over the weekend. A fellow Midlander found a purple heart in a dumpster and brought to the Midland VFW.
Army Veteran Gary Kennedy reached out to NewsWest 9 to help track down the rightful owner. Shares on social media, stations from around the state broadcasted it on their news, even CNN joined the effort. Gary said he received calls from as far away as Hawaii.
A couple days later, the pieces of the puzzle came together. Private First Class Jim C Carter, part of our nations greatest generation, served in the infantry in World War 2. He passed away in 1982 and is buried at the Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland. His nephew lives in Fort Worth and will be given the purple heart next Tuesday.
Consider This... A big thank you goes out to all who helped connect the dots. No question, there were many who went above the call of duty to make sure one man's service and sacrifice was not forgotten.
