(KWES) - If you are like me, you will spend a big part of your annual gift giving budget in the next few weeks. I want to encourage all of us to shop as much as possible with locally-owned businesses.
I had the opportunity to meet Susie Hitchcock-Hall, she's the Susie behind Susie's South 40 Confections. Her creations have garnered nationwide acclaim, but her roots remain right here in the Permian Basin.
Businesses like Susie's survive by being competitive in price and service while investing themselves where they live. The owners and employees of locally-owned businesses are our neighbors and friends.
The money spent with local business also helps improve our quality of life because those profits stay here. When we buy local, we are buying into our community and our future.
Consider this - calling an 800 number or shopping online may provide some instant gratification, but in the long run it may cost more than what a local business actually returns to our community.Local businesses can only survive if they are supported by local customers. That's you and me because the future of our community is in all of our best interest.
