MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - Midland College celebrated Veterans Day in a big way.

They honored a World War II veteran who served as a Sergeant and officer in Guam.

Herman Jones is 94-years-old and joined the Marine Corps at the young age of 20.

He spent time in the Solomon Islands, the Russel Island and Guam.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Jones made his way back home to Midland.

"I was in the Marine Corps, I started in 1942 and got out in '46. I was a Sergeant then and they said well we need some more officers in the Marine Corp, so and I said well okay, I'd be glad to do that," said Jones.

The event kicked off with the national anthem sang by Stephen Carrasco, a prayer and a moment of silence.

Speakers included Midland College President Dr. Steve Thomas and Damon Kennedy, Dean of Social Sciences.

Midland College ended the ceremony honoring Herman Jones and his family.
