Odessa police break window, say man reached for handgun during traffic stop

ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

Odessa police acted quickly when they found themselves in a scary situation Friday afternoon.

Police said an officer broke through a glass window of a car when a man reached for a handgun during a traffic stop at Maple Ave. and University Blvd.

Police said they stopped a black Ford Fusion for speeding. Police said the driver, Clinton Harvey, 33, became uncooperative with law enforcement. After searching the vehicle police said they found marijuana, a handgun and a controlled substance inside.

Police said Harvey began rolling up his window and made movements reaching for an object, investigation revealed it was a handgun. The officer then broke through the glass window and pulled Harvey out. The passenger of the vehicle, Jason Weaver, 38, was also arrested.

Police said the vehicle was going about 14 miles over the speed limit when they attempted to pull them over. The driver was hit with five charges, resisting arrest, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of marijuana.

Weaver was charged with tampering with physical evidence and possession of marijuana.

No injuries were reported.
