MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - A Midland police officer was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after he lost control of his vehicle during a high speed pursuit with a motorcyclist.
The accident happened just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in the southbound lanes of Loop 250 between Highway 80 and Interstate 20.
The City of Midland said an investigation revealed that Officer Jacob Churchwell was pursuing the operator of a black motorcycle that was weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed in the southbound main lanes of South Loop 250 West.
Sara Bustilloz, spokesperson for the City of Midland said, "The motorcyclist did flee the scene so we are looking for the black motorcycle."
We're told that's when Churchwell lost control of his patrol cruiser for an unknown reason after driving on the Highway 80 overpass and slid into the median toward the service road.
According to the report, the vehicle also rolled on its side and came to rest in an upright position.
Police said Churchwell was partially ejected from the vehicle and was provided aid by witnesses before authorities arrived.
We're told Churchwell was responsive on scene and taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Officials add that the motorcyclist continued southbound and was not on the scene when authorities arrived.
""Our message would be would definitely be just come in and talk to us. Let's talk about what happened so we can get some more information and go from there," said Bustilloz.
