Odessa PD: Grandfather shot after confronting suspect

ODESSA, TX (KWES) - One man is behind bars after he allegedly shot a grandfather while trying to steal a vehicle and then shooting at a vehicle as he fled.

Officers were called out to the 1200 block of South Jackson Ave. around 6:30 a.m. in reference to a gunshot victim.

The caller told dispatch that a man who was attempting to steal from her family shot her grandfather.

Ismael Escancega-Rivas, 68, was leaving his home for work when he noticed a man near his car. When Escancega-Rivas approached him, the suspect shot the 68-year-old in the upper body.

The suspect, identified as Irvin Valadez, 24, then fled as Escancega-Rivas' family members chased after him in a car.

Valadez shot at their car multiple times, though no one in the car was hurt.

Witnesses told officers they saw Valadez run towards a residence in the 1500 block of South Texas Ave.

Police were eventually able to take Valadez into custody around 8:10 a.m. and was found to be in possession of about 1.2 grams of cocaine.

Valadez was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of cocaine.

Escancega-Rivas was taken to the hospital with serious bodily injury.
